Silk Road - 27 May 2009 - Dungang Monastery in Kyrgyzstan

Karakol was built in the 1860s as a Russian fort. It is now a relatively modern city with a downhill ski resort near by. We went to the Dungang Chinese Mosque, which was built in 1910 by artisans imported from China. It was originally built with no nails. There are holes in the designs because the local imam decided that the decorations in question were pigs which are considered to be dirty. I bought some souveniers at the stand outside the mosque.
