Silk Road - 1 June 2009 - Uleg Bey Observatory, Samarkand, Uzbekistan

After breakfast, we went to the observatory built by Uleg Bey. He was the grandson of Tamerlane and was murdered by his son, who was egged on the religious fanatics of the day. Uleg Bey believed in education for women, which was against the strict Islamic culture of the time. There were also woman poets at that time. Uleg Bey built three famous Madrassahs, one of which was in Samarkand.
