Silk Road - 24 May 2009 - Animal Market outside Kashgar, China

We next went to the animal market. It was originally in the city, but with a population of 400,000, it was becoming a problem to have it in the city proper. They moved it about 6 km out of town. Other than the trucks and mechanized vehicles, Marco Polo and any of the travelers of the silk road would have recognized the event. There were several types of sheep for sale as well as goats and cattle. They slaughtered a few of the sheep and food was sold around the edge of the area. The way it was cooked has not changed in at least two thousand years. There were men selling touristy items at prices that were significantly too high. There were also some sellers of water melons and other fruits outside the selling area. It was definitely an unusual experience.

We stopped to get pictures taken, because we will need two when we enter Turkmenistan. I had them at home, but didn’t realize that I was supposed to bring them with me.
