Silk Road - 22 May 2009 - Jiaohe, China

Breakfast in Turfan was difficult because a lot of the food served was very spicy which is not what I’m used to. With the help of another patron, I was able to get a scrambled egg.

Our first stop of the day was Ancient Jiaohe. There appears to have been human activity at the site 3,000 years ago, but the city of Jiaohe actually started around the 2th Century BCE. Most of the homes were built underground. One of the mysteries of Jiaohe is the burial of 200 babies and young children in one area of the city. There is no evidence of what killed them or why they died. Interestingly in the 14th Century Moslem Mongols conquered Buddhist Uygurs.
