24 July 2015 – Return Home

I was picked up by the driver at 9:00 am as promised and we headed to the airport for my 1:40 pm flight.  I hung around as usual.  Unfortunately I was unable to get an aisle seat for the flight from Seoul to New York, which was 13 ½ hours.

I had ordered kosher food.  The meal provided on the flight from Beijing to Seoul was provided from Thailand.  The meals on the flight to New York were provided from London.

I slept on and off.  The flight made it to New York relatively on time.  As usual cabs were waiting and I had no trouble getting home.  Herman came out and helped carry my luggage into the house.

23 July 2015 – Return to Beijng

We left the Ramada and headed to the Genghis Khan Airport on the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar.  Our plane for Beijing was supposed to leave at 12:50, but did not leave until 1:40.  We spent hours waiting around the airport which is rather small, but did have stores which accepted dollars.  I bought another key chain and a purse that I can give to Alma’s mother.

We arrived in Beijing and almost missed the man who was supposed to meet us.  Fortunately Debbie found him.  Tony was extremely helpful and handled my large suitcase.  I was disturbed that the man who met us did not take my suitcase.  Tony commented.  I was thinking that he had lost his tip.  He got us to the van that was to take us to the hotel and turned around and left us!  The tip question was resolved.  The driver spoke enough English to tell me that he would pick me up at 9:00 am tomorrow to take me to the airport.

At the hotel, I checked in and requested the bag I had left in storage.  It was delivered to my room with my suitcase.  I was impressed.  I repacked my bag so that it is ready for morning.  I switched some items from my large suitcase to my carry on.  The reason is that I think that the dragon I bought for Herman might set off the alarms.  I’ve been having problems with my lock in my purse.  Hopefully I will only have to take my small bag apart.

I took a refreshing shower and once I throw on clothes, I will be ready to meet my traveling companions for dinner tonight.

An Italian restaurant was selected for this evening. The food was good and the company was great.  I’ve really enjoyed this trip.

22 July 2015 – Back to Ulaanbaatar

Breakfast was served at 5:00 am which meant that I had to get up at 4:30.  I got my bags packed and headed over to the dining room.  We left the camp at about 5:30 and drove thru the Gobi desert.  We saw the sun rise.

When we got to the airport, we had to wait a while.  Fortunately I did not have to pay for my overage.  Arriving in Ulaanbaatar, we had to wait a bit for our luggage and then we took off with our driver.

Next was checked into the Ramada hotel.  We had about an hour to rest and I checked my e-mail.  After all I had been out of communication for two whole days.  Amazing I survived all that time without e-mail!

We had lunch at a chain restaurant and we had their signature dish, hot pot.  This cooked by heating rocks and putting them into the pot with meat and vegetables.  For the most part I had little to no problems with food in Mongolia because they eat very little pork and virtually no shell fish.

Our next stop was the summer palace of the last monarch. Pictures were limited.  The last monarch did not marry till forced to by the people.  He did not have any children but he adopted a boy who could have been his successor.  We also went into the winter palace which was built in the Russian style.

We next went to the high point of Ulaanbaatar.  From there you can see the whole city.  I couldn’t make it to the top; too many steps.  At the top, there is a Monument built in remembrance of the Russian Soldiers killed fighting the Japanese in about 1935.

Our last stop of the day was the Gobi Cashmere shop.  Prices were not that low although compared to what we would have paid in the states they probably were low.  I would have loved to buy some yarn but they wanted $140 for a kilogram and it was thin yarn. I did buy two items.
We headed back to the hotel where I showered and rested for a while before we headed out to dinner at an unusual restaurant.  You selected what you wanted and they cooked it. It was an interesting experience.
